Well your question is a very good one, and there is a lot to tell. To summarize: I work full time for a large service provider called IdleAire Technologies. We have over 100 sites nationwide and are doubling that by the end of this year. We are deploying Asterisk in a very large and distributed architecture for redundancy and reliability, and have developed our own IAX client in which we are using in production today. I have some really good stories and experiences using Asterisk. I have also helped companies starting out use Asterisk in place of expensive proprietary solutions, and even started my own company called Vision Communications based on Linux solutions and Asterisk about 4 years ago because of Asterisk. Now, US VoIP Systems is my new side company now that I am just starting up and using Asterisk and open source solutions to provide telephone services. Right now though I am mostly doing calling cards and some services for friends and family using Asterisk2Billing as IdleAire takes up most of my time. I am also an IVR developer by trade, so I am also still developing applications with Asterisk in which IdleAire and myself are using. Recently I started working on an IVR application that will accept credit card payments over the phone so that people can use a toll free number to just call and get a pin for the calling cards. This will also be used at Idle Aire as a resource for recharging member service cards. It is going to work like an automated telephone vending machine. In October '06 I was hired as a VoIP expert for IdleAire and mostly work side by side with the Director of Telecommunications and the CTO. Currently gearing up for earning some certs. That's my story in a nutshell, and there is a whole lot more, but too much to explain. I have spoken at the ABPTech Voip Sizzles event in Dallas, and have many great contacts throughout the community. I would love to share many of my experiences with all of the members of the group as well as join the group if possible. Thank you again for a great opportunity to meet and network with other Asterisk enthusiasts. I would encourage you to also check out http://www.idleaire.com to see what IdleAire does. We have been featured on a few shows such as History channel's Modern Marvels and and NBC. Let me know what you think. Then Arnold got us on Jeff Pulver's blog, http://pulverblog.pulver.com/archives/006766.html, and he's making a presentation to another large amateur radio group tonight. I talked to Mike Hunter at Georgia Tech yesterday and we have a great lecture hall for our presentations and a separate area with tables for the installs. A fellow from Abroad World Telecom (http://www.abroadtelecom.com) called and he is coming down from Boston to attend and provide free trial SIP accounts to installees. I joined this list at the suggestion of someone on the Birmingham Area Linux Users mailing list and hope to both be a help to others on the list and a sponge to soak up all of your knowledge :D ok, so, the reason I joined the list at this point in time was to ask a real question. We're rolling out asterisk at our small business to take over for a Bellsouth hosted voicemail box, so that we can each have our on voicemail boxes. Our setup is 2 Linksys SPA3102 ATAs, which have 1FXS/1FXO each. We have two analog lines coming into those, and asterisk is answering all calls that come in and providing a small IVR tree. We are connecting these to a two line cordless phone system, which is our existing setup. When a call comes in, they choose a dept, which right now just rings all phones. Here's my dilemma. Right now when I want to ring all the phones, I'm ringing SIP/phone1 and SIP/phone2 which translate to lines 1 and 2 on the cordless phone system and some other SIP channels which translate to softphones running on a couple laptops. The downside to this is that one call rings both lines on the analog phones. This is how I'd like it to work: User chooses extension to call Ring SIP/phone1 + all other SIP phones if SIP/phone1 is avail otherwise Ring SIP/phone2 + all other SIP phones One thing I want to also avoid, however, is having the first diaplan ring all the softphones but not SIP/phone1, and not ring SIP/phone2 until the first one times out. I know chanisavail won't really work since these are SIP channels (I've tried), so I'm hoping someone has a solution for this, and hopefully I've communicated my problem well :) Thanks, Joseph From john at cohutta.com Tue Apr 17 18:32:00 2007 From: john at cohutta.com (John Mullinix) Date: Thu May 17 00:41:45 2007 Subject: [Aaug] First post, and a question In-Reply-To: <9E2D6BF5-B57C-4294-BEA9-D2F81C8071F8@mckinneytech.com> References: <9E2D6BF5-B57C-4294-BEA9-D2F81C8071F8@mckinneytech.com> Message-ID: <006501c78140$38ae3720$9b01020a@JohnLaptop> Joseph, Put your 2 sip/analog phones in a separate ring group and set it up to hunt. Hardware Used: Intel P4 2.66 GHz, 1G RAM, 5325 bogomips, on a BellSouth ADSL - 3251 kbps down - 383 kbps up Internet connection. Trixbox 2.1.5 (2.2 Beta 5) Install Time = 13 min. EasyVoxBox 0.007 Install Time = 27 min. This Trixbox distribution is very nice. It's now much easier to install additional packages like Webmin. The OS is Centos 4.4 and with a 2.6.9 kernel. Asterisk and Trixbox binaries are installed. The nice thing about EasyVoxBox is that because Asterisk and Zaptel are compiled locally you have the sources and can update them more easily. Of course you pay the price in a longer install time. Installing webmin was not easy because several package dependencies had to be tracked down manually. The OS is also Centos 4.4 with a 2.6.9 kernel. Steve Henke, you too are a beautiful man! (OK, enough of that joke.) My wife and bambino touch down at 7:20 tonight. Attending the meeting is very doubtful. Couple of points for the meeting: 1) Tomorrow I'll put out a final reminder about the event. 2) I received an e-mail from a gentleman located in "Quito-Ecuador-southamerica" He requested that the presentations be videotaped and posted to Youtube. I responded that there was some talk of a webcast. 3) I volunteer for set up/break down duty. Thanks, Preston -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... To get to Georgia Tech an interactive Google map with directions to the event is posted at http://atlaug.com/blog/?page_id=30. Parking at Georgia Tech is not a simple matter. A valid Georgia Tech parking permit is required to park anywhere on campus, at any time, except in visitor lots or at a paid meter. Parking meters in Residential zones are enforced 24/7; otherwise, hours of enforcement and rates are posted on every Georgia Tech parking meter. Attached is a campus parking map. The Install Fest is in the Klaus Advanced Computing Building which is marked E40 on the map. I suggest parking in Area 4 which is just West of the building. There are the free Tech Trolleys and Stinger Shuttles that run around campus which can bring you to Klaus if you have to park elsewhere. Installees may pull off Ferst Drive into a dead-end drive that runs along the West side of the Klaus Building. You can see that drive on the attached map of the Klaus Building. Volunteers will meet you there to take your computer into the Install room while you go park. We will meet in room 1443 and the actual installations will take place in room 1305. You can reach me on my cellphone at 678-464-3031 and Amateur Radio operators can use the W4DOC repeater on 146.820 MHz (-600) with a 146.2 Hz tone as a talk-in channel. Finally, the Klaus Building is a wonderful, new facility and we are honored that GTISC is allowing us to use it for the Install Fest. Please be a good guest and note and observe all rules. So good luck parking and we'll see you there! Best Regards, Steven Henke AtlAUG Install Fest Volunteer -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... Has someone else taken up that task? You were down for an assortment of monitors, keyboards, mice, KVM's, Ethernet/CAT-5 cables, AC power strips, a router/switch and if you were going to bring them, Steve Kent's CDROM dupes. I can bring everything except for a bunch of short to medium length Ethernet cables to get from the switch to the PC's. Please let me know. Thanks. Great things happen because of great people and the Install Fest was no exception. Everyone who attended contributed something to our success and deserves our thanks. I especially thank Kris Sheets and Edgar Vega for their work putting the "Install" into the Install Fest. Their official count was 21 installs! Also, I thank our speakers, Arnold, John, Marc and D.J. who held the crowd spellbound while the installers did their job. After this experience, imagine what we can do the next time! Hats off to everyone that worked to make this a success. For those that signed up for the Beta Asterisk Virtual Machines from Aretta, I will be spinning those up tomorrow. You should receive an email as soon as they are ready with the login information to the machine. We filled up all the slots available for the beta on Saturday, but I may have a couple more virtual machines available at the end of the week. I've got another GB of RAM I can drop in which will add a few more virtual servers to the mix. Drop me a line if you still have an interest in getting one.
